If you follow me over on Instagram, you’ll already know that this year, I am a Johnson’s Baby Ambassador. What does that mean? Well, I’ll be meeting with them once a quarter to learn about their research, their ingredients and their products so that I can be more informed about caring for baby skin, and in turn, share what I’ve learned with you.
What do you know about Johnson’s Baby?
It’s a big deal to align yourself with a brand. Becoming an advocate for a company isn’t a decision to be taken lightly. Even when you love their products, and would happily use them yourself, it takes a bigger leap of commitment to share your love so publicly. You’re held to a higher degree of accountability, especially when the company is as widely known and used as Johnson’s Baby.
I’d bet a lot of money that everyone reading this will know of Johnson’s Baby. I bet most of your parents used their products on you when you were a baby and a child, and I bet the familiar scent of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo fills you with a comforting sense of nostalgia. That yellow bottle is iconic, and that’s not a word I use lightly. I know many of you will use their products on your own children, but I also know lots of you will have read headlines, or heard rumours, that lead you to question whether you should or not.
We’ve had discussions ourselves, before I learned about the science for myself, where LPD would challenge our use of Johnson’s Baby products: should we be using so many chemicals on his delicate skin? Are we sure it’s safe? Hasn’t it been linked to causing cancer?
These are really scary and daunting questions to be contending with. When there is so much conflicting advice available, how are you meant to know which way to turn?
Ever since becoming a parent, I’ve been amazed at all the multitude of things you’re expected to become an expert in. Since Pickle was born, I’ve needed to become a breastfeeding pro, a skincare expert, a weaning whizz, a babywearing advocate, and so much more. I’ve had to defend my choices on sleep (or rather, my lack of it), attachment style parenting and deciding to stay at home, and then deciding to return to work! I want every decision I make for Pickle, no matter how big or small, to be informed and carefully considered… but when am I meant to find the time to cultivate such extensive knowledge on an incredibly wide array of topics. And how do I know the sources I find are reliable and without bias?
Amidst all the feeding, nappy changes, bedtime routines, cleaning and total exhaustion, there’s never time to delve into the research for yourself and figure it all out. So that’s why I’m really excited to be embarking on this journey. To be given the time, and the access, and the science to become fully informed, and make sure I’m doing all that I can to protect Pickle’s delicate skin, using the right products, made by a company I trust and I respect. So, why do I trust Johnson’s Baby?
Personally, my respect for Johnson’s Baby grew a million fold when I visited their stand at The Baby Show back when Pickle was about just under a year old. Walking around the exhibition centre was like being subjected to one sales pitch after another, each stand peddling their wares, telling you why their product or service was absolutely essential. When I came across the Johnson’s stand, it was like a breath of fresh air. They weren’t there to sell products. They weren’t there to shout from the rooftops about their latest range or about the fact they’ve contributed 90% of the world’s literature on baby skin research. No, they were just there to help.
I spoke to a skincare expert and a health visitor who were able to answer some big questions I had. None of their answers had any Johnson’s Baby bias. I contributed to a wall of real parent advice, and read what other Mums and Dads had suggested. It was lovely. It made me feel like Johnson’s Baby had my back. Like they totally got it. And it’s a feeling that has stayed with me ever since.
I wish everyone could meet with the Johnson’s Baby staff like I have. I wish they could see how much they all care. Not about selling their products, but just about making life for new parents, all around the world, as easy as possible. And in that regard, they’ve been an absolute dream to work with. From arranging phone calls that would coincide with nap-times (and being super flexible when nap times haven’t gone to plan!), to sending me an unexpected gift for Mother’s Day. I’m proud to be working alongside a brand like Johnson’s Baby. And I’ll happily shout from the rooftops about it.
